5 No-Nonsense Goals To Building A Successful Drone Business

Goldman Sachs Research predicts that the commercial drone market will be $13 billion dollars between 2016-2020. Industries including construction and film/TV will use drones. And if you want to run a drone business then you need to set goals to be successful.

Here are the goals to consider setting:

1) Get certified.

The FAA Part 107 rules mandate that if you take any compensation for flying a drone that you must have FAA Small Unmanned Aerial System (sUAS) certification. There are many schools to assist you with preparing for your test.

2) Setup the business.

You need to get your business affairs in order. The affairs include insurance, required licenses, and business structure. The business structure means setting it up as an LLC vs. Sole Proprietorship. Please talk with a CPA to determine the best type of business setup you need.

3) Systemize the operations.

A benefit of a drone business is that it doesn’t have to be just you. You can hire pilots. But to do this, you must run it like McDonald’s. Meaning you have to systemize all of your processes. Your systems will make it easier to hire help. And even if you keep it a solo operation having a system will make you more productive.

4) Determine what success is.

I know a lot of business owners. Many of the struggle because they don’t know what they want. They try to hard at trying to have the fame of a business owner because it’s the current fad. They would have an easier time if they could be specific about what they want. And be humble about what success would look like. For example, instead of thinking having a national drone business, perhaps it’s better to have a small business that keeps the roof over the head, a vacation and flexible hours that lets you see all of the kids’ plays and soccer games.

5) Get customers.

If you don’t have customers then you don’t have a business, you only have a hobby. I’m in 2 different Facebook groups with small business owners. They are often in the start-up phase. And they are very passionate about their new business. But they fail to understand how to get customers. As a drone business owner, you will need to spend the time to learn how to find customers. Sometimes this will be direct marketing to the end user. And sometimes it will be about building relationships to connectors such as roofing construction firms who can refer you business for inspections.

Goals without action are just dreams. And dreams are beautiful, but they don’t lead to success. To make sure you have success with your goals you need to track them. And have an accountability partner. The accountability partner can be an official business partner. Or it can be publicly stating them on Facebook. And you want to make sure you make small progress on each goal every week. In particular, ensure that you have your certification and proper insurance. Otherwise, you may not be able to operate legally.
